I know a lot of you have projects you are working on. I'm trying to get rid of my cassette player and I stumbled on this awesome deal at Best Buy

It's a Pioneer CD Player with an aux jack for mp3 players and a set of 6 6 1/2 speakers

Does anyone know if that space for the radio allows this type of radio? Normally with the old style radio with the knobs I've seen them with with round places for the knobs and a little space for the body i guess of the radio...that doesn't make any sense, well If that did make sense to you let me know.

I put one similar in the 72 we took on the rally, it takes a little clearancing of the dash area to fit but it should work.  If you have a dremel you can do it.

Might have to check that out for the rabbit.  Its sportin the facory AM right now.  Going to keep that in tact and mount the radio in the glovebox or something though.  The all original interior is kinda cool.

AM radio...god help you. I can't find anything I want to listen to on the am dial except school closings! Well I guess not so much now that I graduated.

Crutchfield and other sites allow you to determine what radio fits in your vw*, without any cutting of dash, or excess space.

A standard single DIN (pretty much every common radio on the market) is just a hair (about 1/4 inch) too wide to fit in the slot in a VW dash so yes you would have to cut the metal if you really want it to fit.

Go for the glovebox or build/buy a lower console to go under the dash and hold the radio.

And TidyCat litter boxes make great speaker enclosures.

And FYI, Crutchfield only shows one (very crappy) radio for a 72 VW bug and even that says "modified fit"

Glove box it is. I had a 65 Falcon and I took metal cutting shears to the dash... it was hot mess. This one is going right into the glove box. The speaker tray is on it's way. I'm so excited. I need to get the kick panels for the front.
