What's different about this engine?
« on: April 10, 2008, 09:09:41 pm »

I have never seen this, I got this from Lupe M., who has been helping me with my secret vw project. He lives in Texas
I think this is so cool.

I asked him if this was some sort of stock item and he replied

" As far as the engine it is  an oldspeed Tri-Power from the 50's.  The center carb runs the majority of the engine, starting, normal driving, etc; but, it leans out at about 1800 rpm.  The 2 side carbs run at higher rpm's and work like vacuum secondaries.  It runs pretty good and is really different at car shows.

Lupe"

He later gave me a youtube link,

  Lupe's engine running

Boy, does that sound nice! - very smooth.  He has this on a pristine 57 vert!

Hope you enjoy!

Matt

Very cool but weird!

I wonder how the jetting works, if the center carb is good to about 1800 rpm then does it have a main jet? ( that usually starts to kick in around 2000 rpm ) do the two side carbs have idle jets?? Corvair corsas used something like this, 4 carbs 2 primarys and 2 secondarys. The primarys were regular carbs and the secondarys were the same carbs but without idle jets. A progressive linkage allowed the secondarys to kick in at 1/2 throttle, worked very well and had power all through the rpm range.

Ok Matt what the heck is the secret project?? an Okrasa 36 hp ? a Judson? a small jet engine??.... I gotta know!

I'll ask him Bob, and or direct him to this site. Not sure if he could see this section of the site though. Again, looking at his utube post, that engine sure seems to run smooth. wow. & You had some good questions as I expected....

Wish it was a jet engine, cause at 5:00 am I'd zoom labout 4 ft  over someones house at Mach 2 (getting that sonic boom), cause said person been riding said members  'bout him sleeping in, napping, watching tv etc while we all wo_king.  I dont want to mention anyones name though - like Jack or someone. That would just would be sooo wrong................

In that engine there, he has some fancy plumbing.

I guess that is a fuel filter sitting on top of the  fuel pump?

looks like the old fashion glass bell & filter stone.

I almost forgot but those secondary carbs used on the corsa don't have accelerator pumps either.

That is way cool P#3 If that set up is perfected & ever made avaible I would be willing to pay big  d-s to have it. That would look soo bad a**  :icon_twisted: on my Rat Rod. The VW equivalent of a 283 with 3 Rochester's & finned aluminum valve covers.
