How bad can it be?
« on: June 10, 2008, 08:56:14 pm »

S@Sm I had a bent valve on #4 last spring. i took the motor out and had the head sent out and replaced the bent valve and guide and push rod because the head wasn't damaged. Well, this past memorial day weekend before i started to head to manassas, i set my valves to .006in. and oil-change. the norm for me. i fired it up, i noticed i had a tapping sound on the drivers side? hmmm??? wat can it be? so i took a piece of hose and started to find where the tapping was coming from. both heads were smooth running, but when i went to the case i heard the tap coming from the area around #4. I was told it might have damaged the cam lobe or the lifter? How bad of a damage can this motor be in, can it be saved and maybe rebuild????? !5!  s3

Did you recheck your valve adjustment?

If the cam is going flat then the lobe is shedding metal that will end up in the oil. The reduced lift at the lifter will show up as a larger gap at the rocker. The gap will continue to get wider even after you adjust the valves, if this is so note which valves are affected.

Check out my blog about Mikes 1776, something similar happened to this engine.
