Chris:

The hand-down best way to remove hinges from a VW is with a Air Hammer tool with a narrow punch attachment. Best thing about this tool is that it will: Cut panels, cut rivets, breaks welds.etc, etc.

Harbour Frieght sells a HD one; Item # 47868-9AAH for $11.99 with attachments. That price is not the sale price and it's on sale a lot. Of course you will need a air co
mpressor.

Ya got me thinking. So I went digging.

Joe's air hammer method is the most popular. Except for some cremudgeon who said "Try a punch & a hammer"  m-d

Protect the paint with cardboard (& felt)...is common in the threads.

I also found interesting stuff on Wolfsburgwest.com. If you search "hinge" you get 19 results which contain the following:
1st oversize and 2nd oversized hinge pins AND 1st & 2nd oversized hinge pin reamers.

I love VW (love. They knew stuff would wear out and had the foresight to make over-sized replacement parts.

OK,
Thanks, was just wondering. I have usually seen the big hinge removal tool made by VW, thought this was a replacement - but seems like there are other methods - great

Matt,
Don't know how the paint is around the hinge pin but score around the pin with a shape knife, this will cut down on boogering up the paint.

I saw that hinge popper on the samba the other day. How many doors would you have to take off to justify the $175 price tag??
