I can't see chit at night so I'm ready to upgrade my headlights. Currently have the stock type sealed beams which are new, 12+ volts at the terminals, which are clean. Today I searched for info and came up with halogen direct replacements(reflector and bulb). Options are HB2 bulb or the H4 bulb. The H4 bulb according to one supplier is not DOT, street legal. Probably it's too bright? Has anyone made the conversion?

I have the halogen, and though I cant remember which one I got, it had to be legal, or it would not pass inspection. - but could have sworn it was an H4 888.  Make sure your fuse ends & brass holders are clean too, that helps a lot with power getting to your headlights
My halogens are pretty good, I have no problem seeing at night ( even with a gen) - though of course it could be brighter ( could ALWAYS be brighter til I get things in front of me to melt!).

I always thought if I was going to want more light, either go with an alt, or additional lighting ( fog type but clear.)

Hope this helps.

Jim,

got the halogens on my 72 and driving lights. The headlights are a great improvement over stock but I almost never use the driving lights. If I had to choose I'd take the halogens over the driving lights.
