Glass Install before Aug 3 meeting
« on: August 02, 2009, 09:20:14 am »

Ok, I got the side windows out of Glow-Bug. Nothing special about taking them out. Just need a small flat blade screwdriver and a razor knife. If yiou guys are still on, I'll bring:

Per suggestion, I got best seals that CIP sold. Made in USA rubber

Hand cleaner - I read that somewhere.

razor knife, flat blade, needle nose

What size wire should I get? I got a spool of something somewhere...

Oh yeah, a 320 Gb external hard drive. Cant figure out how we use that in a glass install, Maybe to stand on to reach just THAT much further?   @7@

I've done a few dozen windows or so and all I ever used was some liquid dish soap, some wire about 14 gauge and long enough to go around the rubber, and a large suckshion cup if available. A pottie plunger will work also, "a clean one". A extra set of hands comes in extreamly handy and almost manitory @@@.
Never broke, chipped, or cracked a window.  Note if you leave the rubber warm in the sunlight it will go in much easier.  :icon_thumleft:

The real thick weed wacker cord works great also.

You don't want it to be to thin, it will cut into the rubber.

dont use the weed wacker wire- some are made with ribs and are plastic- they will cut through the rubber. Like jay says- electrical wire about 12 -14 gauge. Make sure the hand cleaner doesnt have the grit in it. It must be smooth. Dish soap can be used but it tends to make the wire too slippery. I dont use the suction cups. Thats just jay showing off  :icon_wink: Two people are all thats needed to do the job. No pottie plunger needed.

Ok. I'll bring both 14 gauge and .095 weed wacker. Bringing the GoJo hand cleaner and the ajax liquid detergent. I think its grapefruit scented  LAUGH@

I've got a two cupped floor tile puller I'll bring just because of the jokes that can be made with it. -55]

I'll go out now and put the seals in the sun...ah, nevermind...

No you really don't need a suchion cup unless you would like to ensure the safe handling of your glass, besides if your helper on the outside of the car has to pull or push a corner of the rubber molding and hold the glass with the the other hand. Then the suction cups really make for safe handling enabling your helper to do two jobs while securing the glass . You can either be Proactive and save the glass or reactive and buy the glass twice.

thats not gonna work! you need the Strawberry scent!

Seriously I think after the meeting would be a good time, we usually run about 1 hour and at 8 its still light out also Taylors has some very strong lighting in that parking lot.
this should be a good one since I've only done a couple of windows and always the wrong way so it will be good to learn what works.

Ok - Cool.

I'll look around for the non-gritty hand cleaner. I got it somewhere.

OK Rich, you're on for the tech session - In the parking lot after the meeting.

It should be a good one. Although I did install all my wndows in 'Old Blue' I did crack the original windshield putting it back in- It was a cold winter night and I got it half way in and quit for the night. the next morning the window was cracked.  >:(

Thanks

Well, we didn't get the windshield done but we did get the side glass done.

Install new seals on the glass with the joint (seam) down and in the center

Run cording or in this case copper wire with a plastic jacket, in the grove al the way around the seal and criss-cross it at the bottom. Spray a soapy water solution all the way around the seal

Place the window up against the outside of the frame with the criss-crossed wire holding the groove opened and in place on the bottom lip of the opening

Notice just below Georges hands the lip of the seal is over (inside) the window opening where the wire has been pulled out (between the two ends of the wire) and it is covering the excess headliner

The last step is to unroll & properly seat the outside of the rubber seal as Martin demonstrates, to make sure it seats correctly & looks nice

George does the same for the passenger side

Next we install the windshield.... stay tuned

It was great to see so many people dive into the glass install last night. I didn’t know we had so many talented glass installers, good job.

Lets see, what do I need glass installed in?

OH, I need the right rear side window on the bus done, all the other windows are done.

Glass Install AFTER Aug 3 meeting
« Reply #14 on: August 04, 2009, 09:13:37 am »

Much appreciated everybody. Looks great!

I'm planning on doin the back window in the next month, since I dont have any metal repair around it. Thanks for  not pointing out it took me 20 minutes to put the seal on my window when it took you guys 2 minutes  LAUGH@. I have to save my pennies up for a new front window seeing the shape its in, so I wont waste the seal job on it just yet.

I got plenty of gritty, non-gritty, and smooth hand cleaner in case anybody wants it. I always just spray my hands with WD-40 to clean 'em, plus leaves a nice aroma  :icon_sunny:
