Suggestions needed for a Super drop.
« on: August 28, 2009, 12:18:32 am »

I would like to get rid of the well known super beetle shake. I need new front end parts anyway so I would like to drop it a couple of inches. I plan on using stock rims, but I would like input. I know there are one or two suppliers that specialize in this but I have seen others with a nice setup for a lot less. For those that have done it (or known somebody that has) where did you get the parts? Were you happy with the supplier? Are you happy with how it now rides and handles? ( I have a 73 - if it makes a difference)

Dad knows of a site specialalizng in dropping supers. Of the top of my head I can't think of it. It's actually much easier, I believe you just change the struts.... but don't quote me.

Mike,

check out these guys, all you need to know when lowering a Super....

http://www.toplineparts.com

I didn't lower my super but I have their urethane bushing kit, extra camber track arm bolts and  +3 degree castor bushings. all this plus a new idler arm bushing and a new steering stabilizer cured the shakes. These guys know supers and their front ends better than anybody!

That "Super Low Kit" looks like a nice kit with lots of adjustment for height and all the parts your would need.

As always, take your struts to a shop with a good spring removal tool to remove your strut springs. This is NOT something a novice should do, You'll shoot your eye out. Oppps, I mean It will take your head off!!

+1  Springs can kill.  I have the tool but it is one of the few I won't loan out, too much risk of someone killing themselves if done wrong.

Thanks Dave, I'll keep that in mind for when I am ready :icon_thumright:. I know about spring strength. You shoud try removing the front springs from a 55 Tbird, That car was a bit heavier with some meaty springs (except for the side where the spring was in two pieces). Putting the new springs in was a test of patience and finesse.

I agree with Bob about topline, got parts from them, good quality, and solved my shake probs.

Helped my brother do his springs in his Toyota recently, yea, just take your time.....

also many car stores will loan compressors out for free

Good luck!
