What year? Anthing 67 or newer has to go through emissions here....but only in certain counties.... %6%

It's a '76 - Pretty sure it is the stock motor, with at least 120,000 miles on it - odometer reads 17,563 (or close to it) It's non-catalyst.

In keeping with the thread:

When I got the car the speedo cable was broken. Rather than just blindly replacing the cable, I did some investigating to find out why. It turns out that the speedometer was totally locked up when I inserted the broken cable end into the speedometer & tried to turn by hand.

I decided to remove it & open it up after taking LOTS of pics of no less than 12 wires attached to the back of the speedo.

After documenting everything, I carefully worked the bezel off of the front of the speedo, and removed the glass and fuel gauge. From there I could remove a few more parts & get at the input shaft.

The input shaft has a magnet on the end of it. This creates a sort of 'magnetic flux' (for lack of better term) and that makes the speedo move. This of course, only happens when the input shaft is not binding in it's bore! I removed the crusty input shaft with a drift pin & small jeweler's hammer. I cleaned everything and lubed it with white lithium & polished the input shaft with a Scotch pad. I could feel a flat spot and the shaft would bind in certain clock positions. I carefully removed the high spots of the input shaft bore with a dremel & 1/16" end mill. It took about 5 or 6 times of just 'kissing' the bore to get the tight spot out.

After re-assembling and logging 250 miles, I'm pretty sure I fixed it  :icon_cheesygrin:

Pulled the Speedo out of the dash today ..... that was easy   :icon_sunny:

Pulled out and replaced the speedo cable with new German cable   :icon_thumright:

The old cable was a cheap after market copy, actually to long, was putting pressure
on the speedo bearing.  May have actually caused the speedo to go bad.   m-d2

Waiting for new speedo to arrive  BO**  in the mail   I1t

The thought did cross my mind...but as the game would have it, a rebuilt one is around $150. A NEW one (sans gas gauge) is $250-300 & knowing myself well enough - I'd have to get the new one...I'm a firm believer in: "What one man can do another can do" - one of my fav movie quotes from 'The Edge'

So...with funny money funds for the VW running on the low side, I figured...wy not give it a go & see if I can fix it.

Some days it pays to be Scottish T1

In other news, I scored a Stewart Warner South Wind gas heater "made for Volkswagen" tonight from a guy in Philly. He says he bought it for his (really nice) speedster kit car, but never got around to it. It's in really nice shape & doesn't even look used. The exhaust pipe is still new-looking galvanized steel & a quick peek into the business end shows clean, but dusty paint. He said he bought it 20yrs ago from a VW guy with lots of parts. It's 12v. This is just one accessory that I HAD to have! I set out for an Eberspacher BN2, but didn't want to spent $400 for a bunch of cobbled together parts. This one was $60. I'll need to replace some hoses, find a cable for it and do a few other odds & ends.

I'll be sure to gloat about the nice tropical heat when I get it all sorted out. - Yes. I already have a fully charged extinguisher in the car.  :icon_cheesygrin: Just livin' on the edge  I1t

Short story ...
Sunday I went to my best friend's child / 4 year old B-day party. The 4 year old LOVES my Bus. He refers to it as the Rust Bucket. It turns out that some cartoon he watches ... someone has a old vehicle that looks like the Bus ... or so I'm told by his Mom & Dad.

Anyway ... Uncle Mike shows up in the Bus ... the boy comes running out to me. I open the slider and let him in. First thing he asks ... pop up the tent. OK ... so I'm hanging out keeping an eye on him. Just to be safe ... no keys in the vehicle and the battery is disconnected. The Bus is parked in the curb ... so if he touches the emergency brake nothing moves. Safety first! Most of the party guest come out and check out my cool ride ... AKA the Bus.
OK ... so it's now time for cake and ice cream. Everyone inside. Hours go by and I'm still hanging out. It's 9:30pm and I'm walking out to the Bus with the B-day boy's Mom. 2 police cars and 2 officers at the Bus. OK ... I ask the officers what's up? They ask if it's my vehicle. Yes Sir ... it is. Police Officer: Do you know you're windows are down. Me: OK ... Thanks? ... what's up? Police Officer (now laughing): Someone called and told us people were living in the Bus (more laughing). I explained what I was doing there and blamed the 4 year old on leaving the pop top up. Now I got both officers laughing. They both were very nice and liked my vehicle.

Some unknown neighbor: Bus Hater!
Police: Bus Fans!
