Jack,
This exhaust system may cause CO fumes into the Lovebus. Be careful to leave a window open when cruising. The original tailpipes on VW Buses is on the side for that very important reason! Just don't want anything bad to happen to ya Buddy!

We had this debate at Busses by the Depot Campout! One group said what Bob said... Another said No! No! Air currents causes backpressure on the engine and decrease engine performance. Ruh Roh. (BTW That's the same exhaust I had on Sweet Pea....EvilTune's bus now) I dont remember any fumes. As a matter of fact i don't remember much from when I owned it... Curious

I charged the battery and took Old Blue out for it's first 2011 ride today. It ran flawless.

Then when I returned home, I added my new homemade 2" Wheel Spacers and install the rear EMPI wheels that I bough two summers ago.

The wheels (with the adaptors) are 5 lbs lighter (each wheel) than the original Cragars that I had been running.

It gave the same effect as a lighter flywheel. Something you definitely can feel.

I'll try and post on our Blog how I made the adaptors.

I took the Rod out yesterday also for its first run, we could have gone to Starbucks for coffee together..

Thanks Bob but I know of both theories that you and Shawn mentioned and I'm sure that both may have some validates to them. I'm sure VW had to take everything into account when designing the car so everyone that had a bus didn't sue them just in case some fumes got in the bus.

From my own experience of always using a bug muffler on my buses and my race car haller and offering to put a bug muffler on customers buses as a much cheaper way to go with no side effects (that I know of) is why I don't hesitate to use such a muffler. The muffler I had on there has been bad as long as I owned the bus (maybe thats why my memory is slipping) ((0;

Anyhow, Im sure anything can happen but I just don't know of any real cases of CO poisoning using this type muffler on a bus. I've seen some very bad bus mufflers, mufflers that you couldn't even call a muffler any more that people had run for very long times before having them replaced, my own included.

Enough of that. Your wheels look great Joe.

Getting back to my muffler job, I had the old muffler off in about 10min. and I was so happy :jump4jo": because the PO had put brass nuts on the studs and they came off with like cake. I said thank you PO I'll have this done in an hour.

So I slide under the bus and OMG, the J pipes nuts were stock and so rusted I couldn't even begin to turn them and each nut was rusted down to a different wrench size bawlin)0 typical muffler job. After seeing that I had to take a brake and go in the house and pout.

So after an hour or so back out I go, I get out the air hammer and begin splitting the nuts. OK, all nuts split and they are turning but I have to use an 11, 12 and 1/2" wrench to get them off because of how bad they were rusted and I only have about an eighth of a turn on each nut so it is taking forever to get them off and my arms are about to quit working because of reaching up. So an hour and a half latter with many brakes in-between to rest my arms and sip some coffee the J Pipes are off. The reassembly goes without a hitch.

I' either getting too old %$oldcit for this chit or the CO from my bad muffler is getting to me. :confused04:; My arms are still sore. Maybe its the radiation from Japan?

The next owner will be happy when he does the muffler, I put all brass nuts on it. &(rage_

Jack, You are 100% right about the exhaust nuts! I had to become an expert on splitting those suckers! I also use anti-seize compound on all threads during an exhaust job. I'm glad all worked OK. It must sound like a Monza now!

Yes. Thanks to Pete (Slowtwitch) for giving me an old EMPI wheel I was able to constuct it so that the wheel studs are 100% stright. Anything less will result in not getting all 5 lugs nuts on.

, My first attemp was a dismal failure as I used a VW rear wheel hub for an jig.

Yes Bob, splitting those suckers is the best way to go and you ensure no broken studs, except me, I'm a broken stud. I did use anti-seize also, the next guy will have it easy.
