Nice work!  Was the metal around the hole thinned out due to rust/wear?

 Good job-

as Bob says in the video, the bottom of the tank where the hole comes out is shaped that way to collect water that may get into the tank. Since water is heavier than gas it sits in that area and can sometimes turn to rust just in that square shape.
He also suggested always using dry gas inyour tank to prevent this from happening.

I agree.. Reguardless how much you think you cleaned or cleared the tank of fuel, it will never be completely vapor free. Fuel Tanks actually absorb the vapors..

It is very hard to find a shop that will accept a fuel tank to be welded and many will not touch them.

I have welded several tanks over the years, car, bikes, boats, etc. The bottom line is that if you don't prep them correctly things could go boom.

This works for me. Rinse the tank well with hot water and a decent dish soap, actually Hot water and a little hand degreaser works great. Shake and rinse several times. Then rinse with hot water, followed up with some vinagar.

Brazzing is good and bad. The good is that brazzing will flow into cracks and crevis, but the bad is that to do so the sheetmetal stretches and weakens from the heating and cooling causing stress cracks to sometimes open at the outer edges of the brazed repair at a later time.

The best way to do a controlled heat weld is TIG welding, but that is almost a art.

Be safe, flare ups are to be expected just be sure that the tanks has openings so that the flare up will have an escape

One other method that works is carbon monoxide will neutralize flareups and extinguish fires. I have heard of welders welding tanks with fuel in them using this method, although doubt that I'd like to be within a 1\2 block watching?

If you get stuck and need a hand let me know..
.
Carbon dioxide. Fixed that for ya...

You have to call him, he don't come on here. I'm not sure if he works on aftermarket carbs.

I had to Drive the Cabby to work today.  Didn't want to get water inside with the leaky roof.

Got the invoice for my 1972 Bus J-Pipes. Apparently they are made to order, so there will be some down time till I actually get them. Any tips on the best tool to take the muffler off? Seems like a ratchet won't fit and a box wrench would take forever. I also considered putting the muffler and the j-pipes up as a whole. Going to be weird having a quiet exhaust on the bus. Looking forward to it. Next project will be the jalousie window install.

Start by soaking the piss out of it with PB blaster. For a day or so would be best. Then heat the bejeebers out of the nut with a torch till almost red. Pipe wrench would do the job. Just be careful. Didint you break a stud off of your beetle years ago? You know how much that sux.

Yeah John, not trying to do that again. Engine was rebuilt about 5 or 6 years ago, so hopefully it won't be too bad. I'm just afraid ill catch the block on fire with all the PB blaster. I've also heard to work the nut back and forth because grime fills up in the nuts...
