Question for the Bus Boys...
« on: November 10, 2009, 10:42:27 am »

OK...so I am trying to get the double cab closed in for the winter. The PO has a set of pop-outs from Wolfgang Enterprises, and the stock vent windows (for 3rd door & drv side center window), however I am missing the straight pieces of glass for the stock vent + straight glass section assembly. The pop-outs require welding the hinges to the body for installation. Not something I want to do right now. I bought it with a box of parts in the back and no side windows installed.

Here's a pic of the stock/factory window I am talking about:

Do any of you Bus guys know if the vent+stationary window combo:

A) Was offered on a Bus, or if it is Crew Cab only
B) If only the vent window has a metal frame + seal, or if the stationary window also has a metal frame + seal, or if the stationary window only has a rubber seal (no steel frame) ?

Thanks!!!

The vent & stationary window was offered on all the bay buses but the stationary window is much longer and the stationary window only has a seal no frame.

Thanks Jack - that's what I needed to know.

After digging around today, I realized that I DO have the stationary glass (but no seal)   :icon_eek:  It seems that when I brought it home I wrapped them up so well to protect them that in the process, I hid them from myself  @7@

Oldtimers must be setting in...  :icon_bigsmurf:

Thanks for the reply...now I have to order up some seals from Bus Depot - unless somebody has a better vendor they'd like to recommend.

@7@ Shssss, I thought everyone knew what a Bay Window Bus is.

It's the improved & better model of the VW Type II. Much more comfortable, better riding, performance and nicer looking then the older Split Window design. People with Bays don't hype them up to much, just smile when they pass an older Split style bus knowing what a bad uncomfortable, underpowered ride the unfortunate owner is having. :icon_wink:

Paul won't go, he didn't make one cruise this year, he knows his "Split" isn't road worthy.  LAUGH@ :icon_tongue:

Ykuday,
I have a few special 'tricks' in the works for the "T2b". The 1600 & 5.38 R&P trans is getting replaced with a Corvair 110hp 6-cyl and either a Powerglide 2-speed automatic or a 4-speed Saginaw Corvair transaxle. I've got the motor & trans, just have to clean it up, and do a basic rebuild on it. Not going crazy with it. It will be GM stock carbed, with electronic ignition & stock cam. Every effort will be made to not cut the chassis of the truck, instead I will cut or modify the Corvair stuff. The stock motor & trans will go into storage.

Later on down the line I may decide to megasquirt the truck, but the Corvair motors run pretty good with dual carbs. I could go with the 140hp version of the motor, but it really isn't needed. I'm going for torque, reliability and drivability. The transaxle (I've got a posi-traction one) will either be 3.27 or 3.55 ring & pinion. This is a substantially lower final drive ratio than the stock Bus (5.38 X .82 OD) = 4.41 - so cruising on the highway will be very nice. Instead of turning like 4,000 RPM @ 65mph, I will only be turning around 2750 RPM.

Not sure if anyone here has driven/ridden in a Corvair powered Bus, but it is VERY nice. Enough power to keep up with traffic without revving the pee out of it.

Right now, I am going to focus on getting the truck closed in for the Winter. It is in my workshop right now, and I need that space to put material for processing jobs from time to time. I am going to a few junkyards on Sat to find a decent set of rear vent window frames (mine are really rusted) and I also want to find a splash panel/belly pan for the front end that is missing. I need to order up door seals, side window seals, the vent & stationary seals as well as seals for ALL of the doors. The front 2 door seals are available. The 3rd door seal is not...Not sure what I am going to do there. I have to do more research. Either way (factory replacement or not) the 3rd door seal has to be glued on.

After that...onto the interior. Everything needs to be recovered or replaced.

Way to go!!! I'm suprised no subie power but the "TransVair" swap is a good one.
Unlike other VW busses at least it will keep up with traffic!  :icon_evil: :icon_twisted:

Heres a couple of good Vair sites:

Do a search here for TransVair, there were a couple of post in the last couple of weeks about the subject

http://www.corvaircenter.com/

This is Clarks Corvairs they are the "Gene Berg" of vairs and still carry parts for the trans-vair bus swaps..

The swap is a clean one...and it is still aircooled. I would not do a Subaru swap for 2 reasons:

1) If I wanted a watercooled engine, I'd buy a Vanagony
2) Contrary to what most may think, the newer Subaru engines are not very durable. I don't say that to flame...just what I think after hearing what my buddy who works at a Subaru dealership tells me on a weekly basis. His own car wiped the motor for no apparent reason.

I am familiar with Clarks (and the Crown stuff & Otto Parts etc) - It's been a while, but I think I can get everything I need.

I spoke to a guy on the phone today who has a brand new complete Transvair kit with all of the goodies for $200. I'm going to get it since it is NLA through Clarks. I'm buying it so I don't have to fab the parts myself. Plus, at this point in history, I want to measure them and post the dimensions of the parts on the web in case somebody else wants to do a swap like this. I'm going to call Clark's to see if the original instructions are available, since they seem to be as rare as hen's teeth...

Speaking of hen's teeth - no dice so far on finding a T2b 3rd door seal. NLA from WCM & WW. My wife has a friend in Germany who buys/sells auto parts. I am going to see if she can locate maybe 20 seals since nobody has them here. There was a thread on the Samba regarding this...We'll see how it goes.

Not sure but I think Clarks still list the chevy to VW axle adapters. The powerglide is a natural for a bus as they can handle much more torque than the vair engine can put out.

Anybody who was around South Jersey back in the late 60s or early 70s would remember "Willis VW" ( now Burlington VW on rt 130 ) Mr. Willis was a pro at swapping out camper motors & transaxils for Corvair tranmissions and motors. At one time there was a stack of dead Corvairs stuffed behind the main building. I understand he would buy up every Corvair he could ( back then they were a $300 car at best ) for the swaps.

The very best one I'd ever seen was a split window single cab with vair power and a canvas "wagon train" cover over the back, one nice ride!

Hope you can pull it off but expect lots of  Poof Poof Poof from the Purists

Thanks Bob. My best bud in high school (still best bud) took apart his '68 Yenko Stinger and did a full resto when he was 17-18...I remember multiple occasions where he would come into class with his hair looking like a rats nest because he 'fell asleep AGAIN' under the car working on it! He had a 'vair, I had a '67 Beetle. He will be helping me with the conversion. I was thinking of going with the powerglide for ease of installation, but he seems to think that adapting the 4-speed shouldn't be too bad either. So it's the 4-speed as the 1st choice, with the automatic as the back-up plan. The 4-speed will keep it more authentic to drive, with a wider gear ratio selection. The powerglide still irks me a little since it only has 2 forward speeds and no park position...

When the purists start paying for parts and labor, then I will consider their opinions  (((

You should swing by when I get to the swap stage...You're one town over from Oaklyn...
