The bet on Beet's Bus purchase
« on: November 18, 2009, 09:55:53 am »

Ok, if Beet buys his Bus by this Saturday:

- I will deliver in the GlowBug to Scotland Run Park hot just out of the oven Philly Pretzels for folks to munch on during the cruise. ( If they are closed that morning, I'll substitute DunkinD  plndonut donut) I can't make the full cruise as I have my nieces birthday party, but I can stop by at the park.

BUY THAT BUS!!!  busicon2

Can't buy the bus till I have the rest of the dough, heard he is tough to track down so I'm going with the full amount instead of just the deposit. Life is never simple. If he doesn't take what he has marked I'm going to move on.

Have you even seen this bus in person yet?

How can you be sure that it is 'the one' ???

It's akin to getting on eHarmony or Match & seeing blurred neck-up pics from a potential date.

Ya gotta see it in person. All the karmic/magic/joo-joo/feelings in the world won't make up for a bus that needs more time, energy & $$$ than you are realistically willing to dole out. I got a good slap back into reality when I drove all the way up with a truck & trailer to northern NH with a $6k lump in my pocket to buy what looked like a real solid '68 Westy a few years back. The pics looked great. The buyer had a sentimental name, as did the town, telling me that this must be some kind of omen...

Well the virtual bubble of peace love & happiness was burst wide open when I saw just how much mud was in the body (nose was hit pretty hard), the undercarriage was rusted thru in spots, it smelled like someone pissed all over the interior, and there were ACTIVE wasp nests all over the thing. I drove it & the motor was tired, the suspension worn out & the brakes needed an overhaul. I went home with my tail between my legs and was sad about it, but not stupid enough to say to myself, "Well...you came all this way...might as well just get it" - Done that before & didn't want that experience for myself again.

So...not to piss in anyone's Cheerios, but ya gotta go look at the bus and use your LEFT brain to make the decision. Buying vehicles is a good test of whether you really use your LEFT brain to make the decision, or if you are seducing yourself again, getting caught up in fantasies...(this is how we ALL get into trouble in life...tricking ourselves)

Personally...I REALLY HOPE that this bus is the mutts nuts and that it is solid enough for you to drive & enjoy without a ton of work to make it road worthy. Be smart & love yourself enough to check it out objectively...

What he said...X10 !

Also remember you now will have two OLD CARS! I think I remember a very long thread last year about building a 1776 and some missing engine tins plus a stripped spark plug on a certain Taxi bug. Has any of this been addressed? are you ready to pour more cash into a second project ?? again I also don't want to spoil anyones favorite breakfast food but THINK!!! can you take care of the needs of 2 old cars without living in one? One last thought type 2 & 4 parts are about 2 to 3xs the cost of type 1 parts. Beet not to diss your idea but Brady is right, pick a lemmon and you are going to loose big time.

Well my first goal was to save up to buy a bus in April which will give me more money to buy a better bus. I shouldn't just jump on the first one in my price range. I also don't want to wait around to April and find out there aren't any buses left! Especially with the way the club is headed. =-) Money always burns a hole in my pocket an I almost blew 500 of it on a Surround Sound System instead of the bus!! Just gotta tell myself to be patient. No I haven't addressed the stripped plug or the missing tins, but I'll tackle that when I get there. Both of them require me pulling the engine again which I'm not looking forward to at all!

The perfect bus will show up at the perfect time for the perfect price when you are supposed to have it.

Both of them require me pulling the engine again which I'm not looking forward to at all!

Pulling the motor is easy peasy...4 bolts, 2 wires and a throttle cable. Just remember, the more times you pull the engine out of one of these things, the faster & better you get. Take the surround sound back and buy yourself a new set of heads.  :icon_cheesygrin:

Hey Beet. For all my talk about fate & Hot Rods Gods & stuff guiding your judgment, I got to tell you never buy a ride without checking it out. I bough the Rat off eBay & had it shipped from Florida. When the truck dropped it off I realized that I had been ripped. Paid $3,000 for a piece of chit that was worth maybe $800 on a good day. And  I don't even want to think about how much money I put into it. I'll be the first one to tell you that it's for love of the car & not the money but if I used my head more than my heart I would have passed.

Jack if anything I'd buy a one with the pancake engine and when and if it blows up I'll put a 1600 in it. I really don't like the cots up top. I'd want a full bed. If I can convince some of my non VW friends to go camping, i'd like to have my own lair up top. No way I'm getting into a 50 pound cot unless it's reinforced with steel. =-)

Actually I've seen some later bays without motors, or ones that need motor rebuilds. I've thought about it. Then I'd have to find a good 1600.
