BEWARE ! ! ! If you are using the wrap on a daily driver. BEWARE ! ! !
2CENTS  I had a wrap on my NEW headers about 2 yrs ago. It rusted the tubing to the point that the tube split right at where it was seamed. It works great on a chevy  :icon_puke_l: but on a VW, I DONT KNOW...  @7@ remember that our motor is behind the rear wheels...Splash, Splash the wrap will b saturated with H2O.  2CENTS
              Harbor Freight sells them too....

My header on the 72 is wrapped. I got it at Ben Pillas speed shop.
Never had problems with it rusting anything and its been on the car for around 7  years. I did coat the header with several coats of rustoleum BBQ paint so that may have helped. If I ever re do it I would use POR-15 exhaust paint as this stuff is tough as nails. The wrapping really cut down heat on the rear apron so I think its worth a try.

I know autozone hs it, t was 49for a 50 ft roll, same price as benpila. carparts.com has it too...  I did mine and have not had an issue yet... but the pipes were rusty to start, so we'll see how long it lasts...

Bob!

I did the same on 'Ole Blue'. I wrapped a couple of layers around where the extractor and the heater box joins the head. The difference is amazing, the sheet metal on the inside engine compartment is just warm to the touch instead of HOT. I also coated the wrappings with Rustoleum BBQ black.   $61$

they sell a special paint for the stuff but I'd bet any heat proof paint would work. I didn't paint the wraps just the headers. One other tip, they try to sell you some very expensive stainless steel straps to hold the wrap on, I substituted simple copper wire stripped out of a piece of romex house wiring. Copper doesn't rust and the heat doesn't seem to bother it either. It is important to follow the instructions as to how much to overlap it.

It's not paint... It's a silicone coating. It soaks in and seals out the moisture. Most people ignore this step and their stuff rusts prematurely.

You need the wide AND the narrow to negotiate some of the curves.

Pep Boys has it. Autozone has it. 3 gear nailed it, $50 for the wide, $35 for the narrow. I think you can get away with 1 of each. The Baja has extra pipe so I needed more.

BTW If you do it right, your arms will ache & you'll look like Pop-eye

Wrap is crap! It will kill your exhaust system in short order. It's an old school thing that NOBODY does anymore since it rotted out their expensive exhaust. Turbo guys would use it to keep in the heat to spool the turbo faster - but replacing exhaust every year got to be a hassle. I wrapped the downpipe on my Grand National and it practically turned to dust in no time. It was $450 to replace...

If you want to do it right, send out your stuff to Swaintech & have it ceramic coated. It will hold the heat in better than wrap & it will probably be the last exhaust you will ever buy. It IS that good.  http://www.swaintech.com/

Thanks guys but I got some from Joe. Because I couldn't use the stock muffler I used the wrap on about 3 inches of the header I have on the car where the the freshair hose goes to the heater box and lays agents the header. It's to keep the fresh air hose from burning through from laying directly on the header. I'll just have to see if it works or not.

Easy Big Fellow!...
It's an old school thing that NOBODY does anymore

What part of a Rat Rod is NOT old school?

I've had mine on for more than a year. I've also removed it twice in that time. No rustier than if I had neglectrd my pipes.

Ceramic coating, my hi-tech friend, has no place on a rat rod (IMHO)

Copper is cool idea Bob. I use Stainless safety wire with a Clamptite tool that makes a trick teeny hose clamp that looks great & is easily removable

Which reminds me... I need to show that thing off at a meeting
