nothing

today i tried to start the super that jack came to look at. its all back together, turned the key and...........nothing. looks like i have some wires to check

Does it crank at least? Dim headlights? Fuses? Start with the obvious before you start with the wiring. If it's cranking and not starting put a half cup of fuel in the carb if it sputters then it's fuel related.

nah i got nothing not craking all fuses are good. goin to look at it tomorrow.

bench test your starter. If you dont want to take it out of the car, bridge the two connections on the starter and see if it spins. If not you need a new starter. Also Check your grounds. the one on the battery and the one on the trans.

Absolutely nothing? No click, no whine...nothing?

Do other electrical items function OK? If so loosen, clean & re-tighten the fat cable going to the starter & remove clean & reseat the push-on connector on the solenoid.
If not... Remove, clean & reinstall battery cables AND the ground strap's attachment to the pan

Try it again. If still nothing Put a test light on the fat cable it should light. If not check battery cable has a problem
Putting the light on the small wire should light when key is turned. If not trace back to ignition switch.

If you get light on both and jumping the two with a remote starter switch* aka screw driver gets nothing, rap the solenoid with a hammer (not too hard)

If still nothing... smack the starter a couple of times and try again. If still nothing... it's probably the starter


* Remote starter switch


Everyone should have one of these. takes 2 seconds to clip on the starter & you can start the engine from the engine bay.
Beats the heck out of getting up & going op to the key & then running back before it stalls

Won't you fry the points if you have to keep the ignition on? How do you shut the motor off when it's running?

  I beleive that it depends on the position of the points open vs not if they burn, not sure but that is what I think. They dont burn too quickly. Before I even knew about this possibility, I used to leave the ignition on all time so I can play the radio from the car while working on it, never burned points - maybe I was lucky.
   But knowing the possibility I always would disconnect the wire form the coil while playing the radio.

Also I noticed the coil would get REALLY hot with the key on and the engine not running. It would get hot pretty quick!

  What Shawn has is a momentary connector via the push button on the handle. Pressing the button bridges the connectors on the sel to get the engine to turn over. The key has to be on the ON position to have the engine catch and run. To turn off, turn the key off

Sure.. You dont leave it on all day. But when you have to keep running back & forth while you're tuning, cause the motor keeps stalling, it's awesome.
Also (leave the key off) and its a big help when adjusting valves or finding TDC.

BTW for the clever... You can mount a (hidden) starter button & ignition in the engine bay  I1t
