Ok, had some time today, plus three loads of sheets :) - pulled the starter...

Somehow, I'd swear there is no starter bushing anywhere to be found - not on the shaft, not in the housing, nowhere. A bit of metal shavings in the housing where the starter sits, but that is it...

Brought the thing back to Advance Auto, where the 18 year old said " Our starter tester machine is broken" I said, "Good, so is my starter, and baffled him with "Must be the starter solenoid - I got 12.7 volts from the battery" and other phrases.  Waiting on a new one today.

I have to work overnight tonight, I took pictures of the old starter and housing - I'll try to post...

The bushing is very thin and should look like copper color

Unless it's an automatic... I think automatics didn't have one (confirm?)

Ok, here's some pics...

The "old" new starter as I took it out:

The housing, I can't see that great, but I don't see a bushing in there:

Here's an up close pic, nuttin in there I can see...

And. here's a pic of the "new" new starter bushing that came with new starter. I made sure I put my pretty finger in the picture for Jack..:)

Ok, I have to watch these next couple of sentences, so I'll be detailed..... I put my finger in the hole of the housing that the starter bolts, and felt nothing in there...I guess I just jam this bushing in the housing hole?

The hole "of the housing" looks elongated in the close up so the starter has been damaging the housing.

Sorry, You need a new Trans!!!

No, Not really, just thought I would get your heart racing a little.

Do you have a set of drivers so you can put the new bushing in and use locktight and hope it stays put.

OMG, OMG, OMG... I didn't get past the few two sentences...

Drivers, like punches? I read somewhere you can use a wood dowel and coax it in that way, No? I defer to whatever you think works best...

Yes, you could do that but you want a dowel a little bigger then the hole so you dont drive it to far.

Bushing Drivers....

Has a shoulder that the bushing sits on while you drive it in so it wont distort the bronze bushing

Looks like there's still more than 270 degrees of original hole there. You should be OK with loctite

Thanks Shawn -

So, to do this right, should I get all the old one out? I was thinking a tap, but I guess that wouldn't work for half a bushing..

That's correct. There's a trick where you pack the entire hole with grease & drive a punch (the size of the shaft) with a hammer in and since the grease cant compress it pops the bushing out. But I don't think it will work either.

Guess it'll take some careful chieseling

Rich,
Don't use a tap! It will damage your trans housing because your starter wore some of the bushing away. I agree with Shawn. If you get a small chisel or awl under the good side of the bushing, you should be able to pry it enough to get it out. The picture shows definitely why your starter would drag.
Good luck,
Bob
