An update.
« on: July 19, 2010, 03:44:01 pm »

Ok well, I got my engine back in. I was all ready to fire up the engine, when I was setting the valves I thought it was all ready. After I set number 4 I kept spinning the engine and I heard a clack. I am pretty sure it is in the valve train, but hadn't had a chance to see the sound source. I havnt had a chance to try to figure it out. I was putting this out there maybe someone has had this problem?

Some backstory.
I had a running engine. I rebuilt it with a new case but same cam, crank heads. Ect. This spring I rebuilt it with a smaller base shim, when I went to set the valve lash last time the
rocker arms never came away from the valves. I bought a larger base shim to set the deck High like it was the first time.

This time with the new shim I still had no play to set the valves. I put a shim under the rocker arm and I was able to get the valves set.

well I narrowed it down to one valve/lifter combo/

number 4.
how do I figure put which one is the culprit?
spring or lifter?
a chicken/ egg question.

But both valves where hanging up.

Is that lifter chewed up inside?

Was the engine hydraulic lifters before?

It has some marks from the rod hitting the non center part. The other lifter looked fine.

I'm not up on T-4 engines but you said you used the same cam, isn't the hydro cam differant then the solid lifter cam? Maybe higher lift.

Solid cam. All I changed was the engine case.

Well as of now I fixed it. The lifters were getting hung up on the case. If they were not perfectly set back they would stick, but not budge. Once I got it not to clang I turned it over by hand several times.  I dared to dream and hit the starter. No noise! ( well besides the engine pumping away.) I ran it for a  Minute and the oil light went out. I walked back and I had a pretty  good leak above the filter.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that it Is leaking from the sender.

I will have it running by Saturday. But not on the road.
Did you ever get the right piece of tin for your bus?
