Those of you who have had a garage/shop have done/not done things you love/regret.

Bob(Herbie) posted something in my blog that got me thinking.

I have a bare metal building. I want to do all kinds of stuff to it to make it "perfect"

What do you LOVE about your garage?

What do you hate about it?

What would you have done if you could?

It's my own personal space. Off limits to wife & she is not allowed to put any stuff in it.

I can't enter it from the house.

My Garage:

Pro's:

- Lint from Kenmore heating system piles up on tools I dont use. Easy to spot useless stuff.

- Stains on floor shows every project I've ever worked on in there

- Don't need to do flexibility exercises as its often a requirment to be a pretzel to do simple things

- Look forward to all the seasons changing, since the cold will be replaced by driving rain through the leaky garage door.

- No room to sit down, so Jack has to fix something when he visits


Cons:

- You got to be kidding me... :)

1st one is good. 2nd is bad. 3rd is a should have when I had built. 4th Well I have rearranged it 3 times so far

I's not that I regret not doing some things I just regret I'm not well off enough to do them.

 I wish I would have had the money to buy a nice wall mount natural gas heater. I think the gas Co. would have run the line from my meter for nothing.

My used air conditioner from Pat works well in the hottest weather. Due to good insulation.

Larger garage was out of the question due to money and it would not look good on the property.

The one thing I regretted was not painting the floor but now I don't.  

I put plastic in the attic the lengths of the building to keep the soffet's from getting clogged with the blown in insulation. You would have to see it to understand it.

You can't have to many elect. outlets or lights with switched zones.
Plan where your air compressor is going and hard pipe it along one wall with 2-3 outlets and a drain.
By code I had to run lightning ground in each corner of my garage to a 6' ground rod in each corner. May want to consider doing it.

Soooo, for what its worth I love my garage and don't skimp on insulation.

Good:
I had insulation put in under the metal siding.
I had a steel ceiling installed for several reasons 1 excellent light reflection. 2 holds R-30 bat insulation. 3 great place to hang lights.
Insulated overhead doors.
Vented Propane garage heater. (working on wood heater) Also coming up with a plan for a passive solar heater.
100 amp sub feed service box. No problem with welding, lift or compressor. I wired outlets on almost all the posts.
I had a shingle roof installed to match our house.(My wife may have had a say in this)
I built lofts at both ends for upstairs storage.
I installed A/C

Bad: I wish it were bigger so I could store more Bugs.

I will think of more good stuff...

I know that feeling. This was an old union annuity that they stopped paying interest on.
It was just enough to get the structure & the slab done.

24x32 seemed perfect. The 12' height was an accident. I'm getting used to it. I'm sure I'll be glad about it later

Pete just finished running Black Pipe for his new garage...
I run PVC in the basement (Oh chit... Gotta get that 60 gal compressor out of the basement! ?/banghea?/ )

PVC vs Black Pipe? Any thoughts? PVC has been fine in the basement.

As for the lightning protection...Without a doubt. Especially with the tower sitting right there.
That tower has 4 ground rods & the building will too!

Steel Ceiling? Corrugated? Need input...  &$hmmthin_+

White steel siding screwed to the trusses. I ran all the overhead wiring before the ceiling was installed. As the sheets were put up, the insulation was laid on top. The insulation is great. And, it makes it very easy to heat and cool. Last sheet was a removable small trap door, just in case I screwed up the wire job or whatever! If you are coming to Beetle Breakfast Saturday, you and (any other member) can come over and check it out!

PVC is an accident/injury waiting to happen.  It is not made to hold pressure.  Go with the black pipe or another product designed to carry air.
