58 convertible is it worth it?
« on: August 14, 2012, 10:03:41 am »

Well I missed out on a 62 last week in Bucks county PA m but i found this 58 .  The stroy is the motor and trans is  not Original ,  he Made his own convertible supports , and there's a make shift patch in the luggage shelf .  There is a top frame but no top and he put a early steering wheel on it from a chevy .
Do you think this VW is worth 3,500 ?

Oh it needs the right gas tank to ...

How are the pans? Check the corners at the bulkhead for rot and the front beam. If the body is good, it can be worth it if you want a vert. Remember vert top parts are costly!  2@cent

OMG- run from this!!

The stroy is the motor and trans is  not Original ,

how much do youknow about the current motor? The rear fire wall is missing, ALL of the cooling tins are missing,  the block looks pretty knarly for having an MSD set up put on it and some pretty wires, the carb looks like they found it in a parts box and do you really think any air is getting through that filter? I notice he has stand-offs on the engine lid- must be from the constant over heating.

he Made his own convertible supports ,

the only reason he would need to do this is if it was originally a sedan or the frame has rusted out.

and there's a make shift patch in the luggage shelf .  There is a top frame but no top

again, sloppy work to make it into a salvagable car.

he put a early steering wheel on it from a chevy .

why? it's an ugly wheel to begin with so it looks like he had it laying around. this looks more and more like a collection of parts thrown together.

Do you think this VW is worth 3,500 ?

I dont think it's worth $500 as a parts car. Remmember, you have to fix everything that is wrong with it and this is only what I can see from here. I would maybe make an offer of $750 but you will have to sink at least another $3-4000 into it to make it prersentable. Convertible parts (especially early ones ) are very expensive.

I would be patient and wait for another car- it will come. Trust me.

I paid less than twice that for mine, and it was all done (yes we had some brake issues... *cough cough*  but other than that)..   2@cent

Geez John... You went nuke on the first volley!

That's a $2500 vert if the pans are done and it runs. Its a 58 convertible! Not a 72 super. It's rare and more there than your average 72 super.
Do the work yourself and put $4000 in it and you have a $10-$15,000 car

But having seen c1run1's past work, stock is probably not where it'll go  2@@cool

Just don't chop it into something un-registerable.  whistleegi

If all the parts are there, I would probably get it, but try to get him down.  Also as said, if it is solid, all the better. I know someone who fabbed the rails on his convertible, used heavier metal - he did a great job. Is it on the proper year pans, ie, not on a 67 frame or similar? see if the frame # is right for the body
Good luck!
