Mildred's Exhaust
« on: January 09, 2013, 03:02:21 pm »

Hey Guys,

As you know Mildred sounds much like a tractor... for me it's an undesirable sound. One heater box is shot, the other seems ok. I was thinking about replacing both, but they are 300 bucks a pop. It would probably make more sense to replace them both at the same time right or is it ok to just replace the bad one for now and then do the next one when the funds are there. Planning on talking to Shawn about making this a club event. I just wanted to make sure I have all the parts that I need.

Thanks.  =+grouphu9

Greg,
I have two used matched bus heater boxes. I know the difference, the heater cable hooks up higher than type 1. I also may have a muffler, gotta check inventory. I will sell then very cheap. Let me know. Tell Shawn, we are currently trying to work a trade deal with other parts!
Thanks,
Bob

Greg
I have a set of heater boxes and muffler off a FI engine.
I can let the whole thing go cheap, I'll never use it

Not the same config of exhaust, but if its not off a 79, then the exhuast ports are same and it can be used (if its a 79 FI exhaust ports wont match )... dont forget the tin and tubes are all different and you will need them to complete the swap.

My 2@cent is that you already have the prefered stock exhaust on your bus (the 72-74) and you should roll with it.

If there were j tubes for this motor I would use them. I don't think they exist. I cannot find them.

not impossible to make, but you would need a good exaust guy and the flanges off the old heater boxes.

You need to get on Samba and search classifieds for them heater boxes.

These are the #1 item I look for at swap meets.  Perhaps #2 now that I saw that 1/8th scale schwimwagen at the Christmas party!

The type 4 motor is very popular amongst Porsche 914 guy and those who put the type 4 motor in beetles

Also think outside the box (the USA) Type 4's a huge all over the world

eay.co.uk is a great source for things that are "Uber Rare" here and off-the-shelf common in England

Just remember, the most important thing when doing exhaust work is make sure your turning the nuts and not twisting off the studs,

Sweet, just found this. For that price I might as well have them ceramic coated. Going to get all the parts and talk to Shaun about penciling me in for an Over Haulin'.
