Hey guys,

Anybody ever try getting a title without a bill of sale? Story goes somebody brought the to 73 beetles to the guys house that dad and I bought them from to work on them but never picked them up... It was several years. Without the bill of sale and names of people, is it a long shot to get the title? Dad and I never planned to fix them... But now I want to fix the better one up.

Greg,
You can send for a VW Birth certificate from the VW Museum. Here is a link to the Samba discussion:   http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=398
I think all states recognize this for titles.
Good luck,

Normally I would did and link, but short of time. Joe Anton posted a long piece of info either here or on Air Cooled Auto recycler (PA) about titles.

Could they accuse me of stealing the car? Wouldn't they contact the PO?

I did it for a boat once It was in NJ  not sure its the same, But  I had to list it in the paper for three days and send the previous owner a certified letter and there was something else. Can't remember now.

You could try carfax and try to locate the state last titled. Then contact DMV in that state to get there address. Then contact them and say you will pay the fees for him/her to get a new title to sign over to you. If he wants the car back you can charge storage fees before you release the the car.  You could contact a tag service office and ask them the best way?

I also found this for mopeds but might help....http://voices.yahoo.com/what-if-buy-vehicle-without-title-in-491930.html?cat=27
