Broken exhaust stud
« on: May 10, 2013, 07:36:18 pm »

Map gas and vice grips won't work, too much stud left to drill a new hole. What is my next step?

I would consider welding a bar to it

If you can get access to the stud, weld a nut onto it. A nut that is just slightly larger. The heat will cause the metal around it to expand. Then the nut gives you something to wrench the stud out. I have used this method many times with a small wire feed welder!  %$oldcit

I don't have a welder, nor do I know how to weld... so I'm stuck.

that type of stud extractor wont fit in the head area around the stud.

If you have that much sticking it out, you should be able to grab it with straight jaw

or needle nosed

vise grips.

Use a torch to get the head very hot (not the stud) and it should come out easily  (a propane torch wont get hot enough

HD has one

It uses mapp & oxygen that is awesome. I have one you can borrow, but you'll need to buy tanks. (for the price of the tanks you should just buy the torch. Theyre a good tool to have)

This is the welded nut method....

Also...I have a bus towbar. You can take it to a weld shop (or to your dad's    thumpup)- )
