NJ DMV changes the rules... again!
« on: August 01, 2013, 03:51:22 pm »

OK, so NJ DMV will NO Longer grandfather Collector Vehicles that were registered as such before . &(rage_ For those that don't know collector vehicle status "was" issued to owners of vehicles 25 years and older who wanted to drive their vehicles 3k miles a year with "no" restrictions.   In 2010-11 they changed the rules that limited collector status to production vehicles 25 years and newer (5k or less production) and any vehicle older would subsequently be registered as a historic.  At the time of the change, the NJ DMV professed they would Grandfather any vehicles that were already under the collector umbrella.  Well today I find out they have rescinded the grandfathering and are no longer allowing any vehicle older than 25 years to be considered a collector vehicle...hogwash!  Ok, well they had no problem taking my renewal $$$ but refused to inspect me as a collector...say what?  NJ DMV thanks for the heads up... not!  Now... I have to jump through more hoops to get a refund or credit for a 2 year registration on 2 vehicles that I clearly did not need and no one at DMV had advised about the changes or had a clue what was going on.  Honestly, I don't really care about switching to Historic, but jeez DMV educate your employees or at least have one person at every office up to date on "your" rule changes (that you continue to make up and change whenever you want).   RANT OVER &(rage_ &(rage_ &(rage_

PS.  If your vehicle is registered as Historic, this does not effect you......until they want to change the rules again...

 I ran into this same problem a few years ago when I tried to renew my Collector Registration for my Choptop Beetle. I had gone to the Barrington Office and was simply renewing the very same registration that I had done so for years, heck they even sent me a renewal in the mail which I had in hand in person. The lady took my paperwork and handed me my registration and took my money. As I walked away I looked though my new registration paperwork and didn't see the slip for the Collector inspection, but saw that I was charged the extra fee. When I went back to inquire where my Collector inspection was I was told. Oh-oooo you can't have that any longer. I replied then why did you renew my collector registration and charge me for it but not give me the inspection form? She replied your have to use the standard registration and have your car inspected like all others, we don't give out Collector registrations any longer. I stood my ground and tried to explain that I had collector tags and was told that they were grandfathered. She said no longer. Then she replied that if I wanted to I could apply for QQ tags since my car was over 25 years old, and wanted to charge me again! I asked to speak with the manager which turned out to be another nightmare. Freaken workers all stick up for each other. So I went home and contacted my congressman, provided my info and received a call back from DMV and was given a case number to take into the local DMV. Never did get the collector tags renewed, but did get a refund, along with a bunch of long sour faces.    clap2-*

 Apparently to many people were claiming that they had a collector car and driving it unlimitedly when the registration states that it was for limited usage much like the QQ registrations. So the state clamped down on the abuse.

Wow, Jay your story is identical to mine and thank you for sharing. thumpup)-  I was wondering how many others had to go through this same song and dance and how the DMV would handle it.  We can only hope that someone else with a collector tag will read this and not get shakendown by our fine NJ DMV.  These guys have a guilty pleasure in double dipping into people's wallets.  Bureaucracy at its finest.  I will be expecting a refund or credit, or I too will be contacting my congressman.

You wonder why people move out of NJ. #banghead

 I just heard about this a couple of days ago from Bob Mondello. He had the same problem with his Bradly, a kit car. He said the hot rod clubs and Corvett clubs are up in arms in North Jersey. One guy had to cancell a$70,000 Cobra kit from Factory 5. By the way Bob gave them the finger and walked out of the DMV.

  I'm going to have the same problem when I try and register my dune buggy this month.

  My question is; if I have to go through regular inspection and regular inspection only checks emission and my car is registered as a 67, does this mean I only have to pass 1967 emmissios standards and nothing else?  :confused04:;
