Starting Buds engine

Got Buds engine started around 5pm today, now I have to go out and set the timing. I have to take the rockers shafts off and make some shims to put under them because there is no adjustment left in the screws. I'll go out and do that now and take a compression test, but it sounds good. BO**

Woohoo...it works...had my doubts with as long as it sat.  I can doubt the motor, but never doubt the master, good goin Jack :)

Let me know when its time for the install party.  Gonna be very busy with the fiberglass job going on (see post in body section) but I want to help with that one, lets get this bus goin!

 :icon_cheers: I couldn't agree with you guys more, don't worry about an install date Jack and I (when I'm better) are going to take it down on his trailer to Joe's Bug Repair BUT you guys can help set up the insides plus  any ideas you might have etc. etc.

Alright, thats up to you and Jack, Bud, but we're here if you need us.
Since Im having to gear up for fiberglassing for this new side project we could work out some custom stuff for the inside of the bug :)

I did't get to the compression test last night or instaulling the rocker shims, I did make them tho, I was to tired when I whet back out, maybe today.

It needs flywheel seals, it leaks oil or I should say the oil just runs out.

I don't have to go to work in the morning....

Well I took the compression test and I thought everythig would be great after #3 tested good but not so. Number 4 is a disapointing 105#s.

1-133#  2-145#  3-146#   4-105#

Number 4 may improve with some miles on it due to how long it sat without running, but not much.

Best thing to do is have a valve job.
Second best thing is just a valve job on 3 & 4. or swap the head from the engine in the bus. Right side head 1 & 2.

Third thing to do and what I would try, is to run it like it is. I'm thinking you Probably won't even put 1-2000 mi a year on it if that and it could last quite a while.  s#r I think Jim would take it to New Orleans and back. (-;

What do the rest of you guys think?

But in the end, you have to do what you think is best.

I'd run it.  Like you said, it will be all local trips and you know we will always be there to get Bud's back if anything goes wrong.   I really never saw this motor as more than a stop gap so we could have the bus on the road this year (and maybe next) while bud decides what to do for a more long term motor.

Now if its truly just a valve issue and the heads are good on the other motor then that might be worth a shot.

But yeah, Id drive it to new orleans and back....I really should have compression tested the Dungbeetle...somtimes its better not to know.

I agree with Jim, Run that sucker.

When I'm done my Rod I'll have LOTS of time again and we can build a better motor. We can also get back to the club engine project.

I would suggest we hang on to the old motor, although its siezed it may have some good parts for the future build (heads) and other accessories.

run it but...
If the heads on the seized engine are any good just rebuild them. If it buys some time then Bud should start collecting parts for a rebuild. Just heads, pistons & cylinders should do the job. If theres any end play then a lower end rebuild might be in order. Possibly the original engine isn't in such bad shape so this will give Bud time and at least the thing will be on the road.
