After filling up my SUV and almost passing out due to the HIGH cost of gas ... this question came to me: Why hasn't anyone in aircooled land done a electric powered VW Beetle. One quick search and I have answers:

The above link does just that. He also gives the source for the motor. Turns out it's a kit from a company in Utah. Lots of info for someone with the itch to build something different that doesn't run on gas.

Just a thought ...

Mike,

its been done! a few years ago there was one at fall Englishtown.

Bradley even made a bunch of EV GTs mostly the GT II ( not what I have ) since they had more room for batteries.

I'd think with the technology of todays battery packs this wouldn't be a big deal, but from what I've read the drawback is still distance and charging time.

Maybe this will work:

I'm sure it's been done but I'm with you Bob ... the advancements in battery technology the last couple years this could be a REAL alternative.

Never know.

$4,645.00 for the kit + I would hate to see my electric bill at the end of the month for charging it. Nice idea but I don't think it would ever pay for itself. Screw the Environment, Burn Fossil Fules.  P#3

You'd probably have to replace the batteries every couple of years. $$$$$ I'm with Jack. What I don't understand is, you have all these flammable substances, why do we have to use gasoline? What about natural gas? Maybe we could go back to steam power.  ;D

You buy your own bus, and do what you want to your bus. I'll do what I want to so with mine. Pissing off purists one modification at at time.
