So as some of you may know already yesterday I lost my job at Harrah's. I pretty much came down to myself and two others were the weakest link and because of the call volume they weren't able to keep us at that time.  gl6 I was alright with it I guess, I happened to be a pesimest so whenever something can go wrong I plan on it happening so I don't get uber emotional about it.  !fright! :icon_cry: m-d Anyway I called up up Blockbuster last night and had a meeting this morning and I knew what was coming.

I was told that if they take me back, I'm allowed to have my 1st Monday's off, so this means the rest of the week is up in the air.
I have to limit my requests off.

I mean, in the long run, it's better that I got a job so fast, but the VW Club is pretty much my only social life outside of work. So that's an emotional bummer for me.

Anywho I thought I'd let you know what was going on with my work because it will effect my attendance at VW Club outings.

I'm trying to get at LEAST the VW Christmas party off.

Take care,

-Greg-

Dude that sucks do bad :'(   :sorry_2:  Based on my 30 years in the casino business, what you have experinced is just a small taste of how casinos operate. I mean this from the bottom of my heart, casinos are horrible places to work & your many talents would be wasted there. IMHO it's a blessing in disguise. Your way to good a person to work in an industry whose business is grind up both cutomers & personell & then throw them away.

Thanks Marc, I know I have many talents on Friday at lunch the 6 of us in the training class were talking about if this job is really for us. The more I think about it the more ridiculous that job was, I did manage to get on top of my bills with the slight increase in pay that Harrah's offered to me. The other three that weren't fire were talking about working till they find something else LOL so maybe it will backfire on Harrah's. I really want to go to a tech school, it seems now a days the people who make money are electricians plumbers etc.

Greg,

hey real sorry to hear about your job!
I know how you feel, my wife was laid off about 1 month ago and this is the 3rd job for her since last October. Shes in the mortgage industry so you know how good thats been.

Look on the bright side this just might not have been a career for you. Even if you have to go back to Block Buster spend some time assessing your skills and then go in whatever direction that takes you. You mention tech school and a bit of education can't hurt. I'd suggest a trade where some kind of "certification" is necessary. I say this from experience since I've spent most of my life in the printing business and thats a trade which requires no written certification or license and over the years I've seen the pay scale in this industry jump all over the place while a plumber or electrician can expect a certain level depending on his skills and licensing. Hey you are young enough to give these things a try, don't give up!

Thanks Bob, I'm thinking about getting into plumbing. I have a thing about wires and getting electrocuted so plumbing is the way to go I think, I was thinking about getting into mechanics but I like working on old cars, not all this new computerized crap. Sorry to hear about your wife, I've seen people go door to door when I worked at Blockbuster applying for jobs. Things are pretty bad. I found out from a friend that I might be approved for unemployment because I left Blockbuster to "better myself" and then was laid off and when back to Blockbuster so they may pay the difference of what I was making at Harrah's. If anything it's worth a shot.

Greg,
I used to be a computer programmer until they cooked the books & laid off all 700 of us...In a time when computer jobs were awfully thin. It was a blessing in disguise and I haven't looked back since. Before getting out of that place, I bought some equipment with the idea that it would be my 'Plan B' someday...It all happened much sooner than I anticipated. I've been running my own business, getting paid to play (most days) and doing something that I love, for 5yrs+ now. I REALLY don't miss the BS meetings, people and scenarios in today's office dynamic.

Owning your own business is not for everyone. Working for someone else is fine. The important thing that I'd like you to get is that if you come from a place of, "I'll do this because it seems to be lucrative" or "I can make a lot of money doing that." - you will be miserable in the long run. You are at a good point right now where you should be choosing work based on what you love doing. Whatever that is. Not saying get a job as a VW mechanic, but find something that you are really into that will essentially pay you to play. The money will come...

Lots of good advise Greg. I got laid off, after working for a contractor in Atlantic Chitty for several years.  After the completion of the third casino there was a big lay off from top  management all the way down to the grunts. I saw the end coming when the two guys that reported to me got laid off. I received  my notice about a month later.
BEING LAID OFF WAS THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME. I found a better job d-s d-s d-s  6 weeks later and stayed with that company for 27 years.
So you want to be a plumber? It's too bad my Grandpop sold the business. m-d Heating and air conditioning is a good field to get into now. :icon_study:  Anyway that's my  2CENTS
I don't know how fast my car will go.
It's more important that I know how fast my car will stop.
