Question...are these halves of something? They aren't the spark plug washer that's above the threads?

They were in my oil screen, when I cleaned the pan during the rebuild.

Question 2: Should I be worried?

If that is in fact what they are, Yes, but I have no clue how they could brake in half and I never saw it happen. I was saying them because they ar the only things in the motor smaller then a quarter that looks like a washer. I was thinking you knew what they were.

I would guess someone forgot two washers laying in the engine and they got caught in the crank gear and broke because of the scares on them.

I don't think the dist. drive shims would brake, but if Jay touched them, you never know.

Do they look like spring washers if you put the halfs together?

Those are "Zink-Alloy half shoes" normally one is used per piston. It is an old time solution for todays modern unleaded fuels. They will slowly deslove in the oil and as they do it will help add a slick glaze to your piston rings, valve stems etc. You should have found four of them that I put in your engine for added protection.  stoned#

Look like a wrist pin circlip. I dont remember what vw uses but my opels had em.

Baha (Shawn)

They're hardned.

They don't appear to be broken, but the tips and the apex of each is worn down. They are all the same size and just slightly more than a half circle

They're about .035" thick and each is arched.

If that's what they are... How'd they get in the pan without damaging the cylinders?

6T5 square

There not circlips. Circlips are smaller and look more like thick wire.

I'm thinking what Jack said- Pull the distributor out and look at the bottom of it.

I would almost say they look like end play shims but I have no idea how they would have gotten inside the motor.
