Need input please. I have read the horror stories about recent GEX motors. What I need to know is were they building junk back in 2000 ??? Looking at something that had a turnkey GEX installed back in 2000, it has logged 8000 miles since. 888

Gex has always been a nightmare company. But as luck would have it, sometimes one or two of their motors doesn't explode.

You have to ask yourself one question.

Are you feeling lucky, punk?   (Clint Eastwood)

I would pass unless I had a back up motor.

RUN DON'T WALK!!!!

Yes I'm yelling, GEX and MOFOCO have done more to ruin this hobby than anything!
They both 'remachine" parts that are past their prime and build "rebuilt" motors from this junk. They use some "new" parts but usually its what other reputable companies turn down for one reason or another. If you want a "mystery motor" thats one that you have no idea whats in it or how long its going to last go ahead you won't be the first person to get suckered in.

Thanks guys :icon_thumleft: I've been researching & unfortunitly from what I found the have been building chit motors since the mid 90's bummer gl6 %6% It was a nice rig but not worth the price if I have to put a motor in  :wallbash:

Wow... Talk about pushing the NUKE button when maybe a hand grenade would do. The car has a 9 year old motor in it and the current owner has logged 8000 miles since putting his over-priced, re-manufactured, remachined petrified dog turd, absolute crap motor in.

How about, instead of scaring Mark away from what might be a gem...

Gee Mark, GEX has a reputation for turning out substandard product. A 9 year old motor with 8000 miles on it could probably use some freshening up anyway so if it's running good go for it. If you get a couple of seasons out of it... no loss

If the car was very nice even if the motor went sometime down the road, it would be cheaper then building one from nothing.

Marc just take care of it as you have been doing.

I leave you these two quotes to think about...

"What you don't know wont hurt you"

Read over the section of the muir book that covers engine sounds and you should be fine. =-)

Here's the "Thing" in question. My Jeep is on EBay but if it does not sell the couple who own the Thing will trade me straight up. Or I can simple buy it from them if I sell the Jeep. Been going back & forth with them via email & they are not trying to hide anythinghttp://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=805189

So if this "Gem" is running so great then why are they selling it ??

8000 and ready to be freshened up? think about that one! lets see - 9 years 8000 miles that works out to a little over 800 fun filled miles pr year. Sounds fishy to me...  I1t

What he said! it all depends on the price and if you want to build a motor later on or possibly sooner! Also east coast things rust like crazy hope that nice paint isn't hiding a couple of buckets of bondo! Go see it and take a magnet!

Everything everyone said has some merit but, if you like it and

If is as nice as it looks in the photos and the frame is good it just may be worth it. Factor in another $1000 in case the engine went and your home free.

No mater what car you buy you could end up with junk if you don't look it over real good then an engine could still go.

I'm sure they priced it with price negotiations in mind, everyone does,, I would offer $4500 and go from there.

Hey you never know till you actually look deeper. From the wet look pics it looks decent. If your new venture is a Thing, I have a buddy who has one that's been stored inside for many years and he's not using, that he's thinking of selling. Needs some updating but the price could be right. I have a thing too but I'm still using mine.  :wallbash:

800 miles a year on a car is not good for it. Too much time fo rotational parts to corrode and then grind themselves to crap. You gotta drive em to keep em alive. The ones that get driven all the time are way less troublesome than the ones that sit until the next event

Use em or lose em
