got brake lights now. Just adjusted the brakes, now have to bleed them after changing the switch.

I also did something your not supposed to do. I adjusted the pushrod for the mastercylinder. about 10 years ago I made the mistake of changing the adjustment (Its set at the factory and you should never change it) But this was before I knew about the adjuster onthe floor behind the pedal. Well I've always had alot of play in the pedal (it's supposed to be about a 1/2 "- mine was almost 1 1/2") and no more adjustment in the floor so I researched in my big blue Bentley and it said in case of an emergency or if you have no reference, use 143mm for a start point. I set mine to about 144 and it seems to be right.
Have to start restoring the heater boxes on franks motor. It's going to be messy.

I'm not disputing the book but a 1/4 inch is more then enough play in the pedal.

First you should make sure there is no dirt buildup between the pedal and the pedal stop, that will also give you a bad pedal. if you find a lot of dirt clean it out and then reajust the pedal rod between 1/8 and 1/4 inch.

Right on Jack. I was trained ( apprenticeship) by a VW of America Mechanic and this is exactly the way we adjusted them.

The VWs you can sleep in are more gooder

There are 3 kinds of people in this world, The kind that can count and the kind that can't.

I had about 1 1/2" of play. Now after the adjustment, I have a 1/2" play now. I might readjust again to gain that 1/4" but I want to check the play again after they have been bled.

And Jack- I'm surprised at you- Dirt behind the pedals in one of my cars????  Come on!

I meant, in some cars you will find a build up of dirt behind the pedals.
