There are two plates it can take and the trans has two cross shafts and T/O bearings, depending on the year you have, you have to match the plate to the T/O bearing.

I think 71 and up don't have a throw-out bearing collar
I don't have to go to work in the morning....

Havent seen one of those in a long time!

I thought 71's had the diaphragm clutch, so I check Clymers, says..... "coil-spring clutch for 61-70, diaphragm spring clutch ( since 1971)"

    from the Haynes Manual ?

"All Volkswagens with a manual transaxle use a single dry-plate, coil spring clutch (1972 and earlier models) or a diaphragm spring clutch (1973 and later models."

some 71 beetles can be considered 70 - but if what you have worked for you, use the same. Just match it up - fi you can't...

you can go here and look at a list of plates

I would take the one for your year, -thought my 71 had what was listed here, but that was a long time ago...

and here for release bearing...   again get your year...   http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/wolfsburg_new/transmissions/to_bearing.cfm

Make sure you have a clutch alignment tool when you replace!!
