I own a late model...but I am away from it at the moment  m-d

Bob,
Thanks for the sketches. There are limitations as to what can and cannot be cut...those letters are mighty deeeeep, but I know it is just a sketch. I'm leaning more to the oval design personally as it would lend itself to being in relief...I'll have to mess around with a few designs and see where that gets us. It takes just a weeee bit longer than most people think...

Keep the suggestions coming...Rome, nor the lowly Beetle were built in a day...Mainly because they were being shot at  fig2

QuotePersonnaly, I say screw the late models

kickButt  sqBk still better than those early 36 hp lawn mowers!

QuoteYou could always put it on the front plate.  I'd sacrifice location just for the coolness factor.

like I said not everybody is running a front plate and the toppers are cool but I don't think they would fit the top of a plate in the stock location.

I like the oval D plate idea, you could use it above or below a plate or just pin it to the bumper bracket as a "plate of origin" The mounting shaft could easily be made out of some 1/2 aluminum bar stock.

This is what Jim made for his car and I think it is much better then a frame. He just put one of our window stickers on it.

Well there you have it. I can cut out the ovals out of whatever non-ferrous. I need more info on the mounts. Are they available commerically? Does anyone have a drawing? Can they be made without too much trouble? Will they fit on everyone's car?

Oh...John...by the way, by 'late model' I assumed that you were talking about 70-79 year models...You wouldn't catch me dead in a new one...which I thought was cool way back when they called it the 'Concept 1'...

Are we moving forward with the oval design with vinyl or whatever Bob recommends print/silkscreen design?

Is it possible to make the oval as a thicker plaque? I'd think it would look great if the whole logo could be cut out in relief, not so much 3D but just the background etched out around everything. I've seen Jims home done job and it looks great but its a metal oval with vinyl stuck to it. If it were done in a relief it might be possible to go with a blacked out background and a metallic finish on the actual logo, possibly antique brass or something. Less to paint and I'd think richer looking.

Piece of cake! I've got a D plate on my car so I'll pull it off over the weekend and measure the mounting bar. The mount isn't anything special I'd think it could be bent out of flat stock on a vise in about 2 minutes. I'll let you know when I have it measured.

OK, I'll need some time to put something decent together. I agree that we should do something '1st Class' than just slap something together. It'll be some time after Christmas. I'd love to do it for the party, but I'm booked up solid with work til then...I'll get a prototype together & run it past you guys when I catch a breather.

Thanks Jack, for posting the pic. My oval plate is  4'' X 7'', about the same size as a origin plate. Tried to insert picture in a message but didn't work. Will try again
I don't know how fast my car will go.
It's more important that I know how fast my car will stop.

Thanks for the oval ideas. I'm leaning on doing something in relief, with some 3D VWs in the design. If anyone...ehem...John...wants a T3 in the design, bring a 3D model of a T3 for me to scan at the next meeting. A 1/24 would be nice...with a Hot Wheels being just OK since it lacks detail. Don't bring me anything in a display case.

If the 3D relief doesn't work out...proves too be too much of a pain or too expensive to produce, then we'll fall back on Jim's design (nice job by the way). I figure I might as well at least try to come up with something 3D...I was thinking that type of design would look good in cold cast bronze (resin cast with bronze dust and buffed to a shine when done).

Had this one in the file:

Also My belt buckle is a convex VW logo. Would that help you with logo...or is that the easy part?

The VWs you can sleep in are more gooder
