Holy smokes Batman..I think i got a problem
« on: February 10, 2009, 05:21:47 pm »

So I was able to get the car running, set the timing with a timing light and everything seemed ok...Took the car out for a quick spin and it was running really good. Until it seemed to lose power slightly, timing maybe?...Turned around to head back home when it seemed to bog down then poof...No noise, no oil light, the car just started blowing ALOT of smoke out the exhaust...as soon as it started to smoke it felt like the power came right back. The smoke looked white at first then went blue. The car runs fine, starts right up without any grinding or scary noises. But it's puking out smoke like crazy..Blue smoke means oil right?

No it's a manual. Its not leaking anywhere it hasn't before. There is a slight trace of oil inside the tailpipe. I just changed the oil when i did the ignition.

S@Sm If anyone has any ideas of what it might be please let me know. I am going to pull the plugs to see if i can tell which cylinder is blowing oil out.

The only thing I can think of is burnt piston or rings, would have to do a leak down test.

Did you over fill the oil?

Do you have an oil bath air cleaner? Is it over full?

Is your breather clogged?

Hard to tell without seeing it.

Have to agree with all the above but just one question, did it blow smoke before? and if not what did you do to it before the problem started ? I'm guessing over filling the oil or air cleaner oil might be a place to start looking.

It didn't smoke before.. I changed the oil and installed the pertronix. I had the car running maybe 20 to 30 minutes while trying to adjust the timing. When I lined up the notch on the pulley with the split in the case it was idling real high. I always have had a problem with the idle until it warms up, then it would run fine. Once the car warmed up I adjusted the idle back down around where I think it should have been. Through all of this the car was not smoking. Took it out and got about a block away, going up a hill and the car lost power. Not a lot but enough to notice. Once I turned the corner the power came right back on but it was blowing smoke out the exhaust like crazy. The car will start right up and run fine except for the smoke. The car is fuel injected with a dry paper filament sealed inside the air box. I followed the Bentley manual on the oil change specs as far as type and amount. I am off today and the rest of the weekend, I will try to pull the plugs and check it out. To add insult to injury when I turned it into the driveway my front sway bar broke free and pulled out of the control arm, pushed the rt. front wheel back into the back of the fender. I am at a crossroad right now. Wife said to sell it. I want to tear it apart and rebuild.

your going to need to rebuild it in order to sell it. Rebuild it and keep it. It's hard to see now but come june, 75 degrees and sunny outside, riding down the shore- you'll be happy you did.

John's right. You have to rebuild it to sell it or you take a huge loss. wink wink nudge nudge  I1t

BTW (Call me if decide to take the huge loss)

This may sound weird but... did you change the coil when you installed the pertronix?

I'd go back to plan A, get a good compression test and see if any of the readings are out of spec. This way you can get an idea of whats involved. A wet & dry test can help pinpoint if its rings or valves or at least should give you some idea if the readings are all different.

WOW not a good week! I'm assuming your car is a super so it sounds like its time for a new set of front end bushings. If the sway bar pulled loose from the track arm I'd have to wonder if the retaining nut fell off or if the bushing just rotted away. If nothing got bent and you think its bushing time I'd check out Top line for the parts. I've got one of their bushing kits in my 72' super and they are the best plus they can guide you as to what is needed to get the suspension back in shape.
