Need help w/ Transmission issue
« on: June 29, 2011, 04:31:10 pm »

Hi All
Been awhile since I posted I'm in the need of some help on my 73 Ghia. Tried to go for a drive today but could not get the car in first gear, when I did and tried to put it in 2nd alot of grinding and she pops out of gear. Does anyone know a vw mechanic close to Manahawkin. This is one job I can't tackle myself and I don't know if any members are willing to help me out. Please LMK
Thanks for your time

i am no expert but the first think i would check is the clutch cable. Make sure it's adjusted OK.
With the engine off will it shift into all gears?
Does it make any noise when you push down on the clutch?
When is the last time you drove It?

Hi
I have trouble putting it in gear w/ car off. Drove it 20 miles last night no problem. Clutch makes no noise and it shifts into 3rd and 4th w/ no trouble

Hi Bob,

I live over in Ship Bottom. I'm not much of a VW mechanic, I just tinker.
Bob Gallagher is one of our members who works at a VW shop in Mt. Holly. I know it's kinda far but he makes house calls. His # 856-705-0308. Won't hurt to give him a call and see what he says.

Second idea.
Will it go into reverse?
You could try adjusting the shifter inside the car. Loosen the bolts under the boot and move the shifter a little to the left
if not a little to the right. If you can look under the shifter where the shift rod is. There is a plastic bushing make sure it is in good condition. Under the back seat there is a cover. look under that and make sure the connection from the shift rod to the trans is in good shape.
If not save up for a rebuilt trans!!!!!!!!!!
just kidding

I spoke to Mr George Gallagher and explained to him the problem. I forget to mention to the group the the stick shift is also very loose. Mr Gallagher said it could be the coupler in the rear tunnel compartment. I took the shiftewr plate off today and the ball and socket seemed fine I didn't see the bushing you spoke about DWP did I miss something.

Sounds like linkage problems, I would check what DWP said to check first.

First make sure the coupling under the back seat is good, no play in it.

If that is OK, Loosen the two bolts at the shifter just enough to move the shifter plate from side to side a couple of time. then back to center and tighten the bolts and try it.

Last remove shifter and check the bushing DWP was talking about.

If you near Bound Brook NJ you could call Billy at Foreign car Werks 732/805-0907 and tell him Jack told you to call and you think your linkage needs checking.

Never go into any shop and say my trans is bad, you may go home with something you didn't need. That goes for any repair.

Hi Jack
No luck w/ the shifter yet. I live in Manahawkin in "Ocean Acres". I don't know i9f the shifter bushing and/or the coupler under the rear seat is gone. Stick is very loose in its ball/socket. Car has been sitting for 2 weeks now. If possible I could use help, but won't be around to work on it until Sunday 7/10/11
