Automatic transaxle from a vanagon.

Why not use a T3 auto?  Should be closer to compatible.

Noone believes me but I have in my life seen an automatic beetle (in Columbus NJ as a matter of fact)  Owner wasnt around so I didnt get to ask about it but I always assumed it was a T3 swap.

The top one IS a T3 auto...

And that's what I'm saying. It can't be too hard. Brand spanking new on Samba for $2500.
Put that in Franks vert and it'll be worth $4000 more.

Don't flatter yourself, it's a T2 ( NOT Type 2 contrary to popular belief) transmission they used in the Type 3

I was telling Matt the other day, that the Squareback would make a great soccer dad vehicle, not to mention optimal space for my tuba.

And since I never fully answered....

No harder than it was to stuff this

Into this..

The width means its going to encroach on your torsion bars.  So ditch the torsion and clearance the frame.  Put the trailing arms on the adapter joints they make and go to coil overs for the rear suspension.

Bring me a body off chassis and the transmission and its a weekend or two at the slow pace at which I seem to work.

These are the adapters, they bolt to the spring torsion end and let the spring plate ride on heim joints

Actually I used an unmodified torsion housing, I didnt need the spring plate adapters since I used a stock transaxle.

If you've never seen how the whole thing came together though you should definitely check out wartburg.misfittoysracing.com

I had just looked at the spring plate conversions as an option when we briefly considered going mid engined which would have required removing the torsion bars.
