Engine rebuilt Project

Hello all, first let me introduce my self, I a mechanical engineer, my interest in the VW began with mi first real job, working in the purchasing department in Puebla's VW plant.

And after a little more than 15 years I finally got in, I just purchased one 1600 engine, that has seen better days, my plan is to us it as a learning tool for the future purchase of a complete beetle



The marking on the case are:

MEXICO AS 41
3 M VW 043 101 102 A

MEXICO AS 41
2 M VW 043 101 101 A

As you can see in the pics the tear down has began.



What should I look for?

Are there any numbers under the generator stand ?
That is where the Engine codes are.

The numbers on the side of the blocks.. MEXICO AS 41
2 M VW 043 101 101 A

AS41 means the  cases are made of Magnesium with 4% aluminum and 1% silicone.

I have one with no numbers bawlin)0 all that means is it was a aftermarket one.

Thanks, no there aren't numbers under the generator on the engine case.

Is there a way to know when was it build?

This is the best that I found for those numbers.

There are two major numbers on a Volkswagen engine. The first is the engine serial, which is stamped on the boss for the generator stand. It will read something like "AE 4225147." (The most important part of that is the letter or letters at the beginning of the serial number. There's a breakout of these letter groups in John Muir's "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive"--and he also lists the timing for each engine series.)
The other, which you found, is the part number. 043 101 101a is a dual-port 1600cc engine--which dates from 1970 until end of production.

Also, year of production really doesn't matter on a Type 1 engine since once VW designed an engine, they didn't change the way it was made.


Also check to see what size studs for the cylinders 8mm or 10mm.  8mm being the better case.  &^beer&

It is still on parts, I am buying piston rings and more parts, but I am taking to much time.
