Sunny's recovery from Sandy!
« on: May 04, 2013, 03:48:42 pm »

Ok, So a lot of you know my Father in Law (buglvw) got spanked by Hurricane Sandy.  They were lucky and are all fixed up and ready for summer.   :jump4jo":

His Bug, Sunny, decided to try life as a rowboat and discovered he could float a little!  bawlin)0  So after many sleepless nights, Tim fought off LBI security and managed to convince Sunny that saltwater isn't his friend.  #sick Ruby (my bug) was heartbroken after discovering Sunny was shacked up with a cheap little pickup truck  &(rage_  and it was time for him to come home and get cleaned up!

SOOOO here we are with a stripped down and mostly saltwater free Sunny, who is also learning to rollerskate.  (inside joke for now as Pics are to follow, I have to work on the album.)   **^bana0

Well, I woke up to find that a donor bug nicknamed Rusty turned up in my driveway.  I mean, really, this time 2 years ago my driveway was full of Chevy's and a little yellow bug came to visit for the afternoon and now 2 years later there are 3 bugs in my driveway.  How does that happen?  :confused04:;   And how soon can I expect a camper bus??   #@rofl3  But I digress...

Anyway,  this little Rusty is kinda cute and has graciously decided to donate lots of parts to help Sunny recover and Ruby refresh.  Hopefully, my FIL will post his pics of Sunny after his ocean swim and I will post what I can.  Since the guys are doing most of the work when they can, I will try to update this thread and hope they will both pitch in, 2.

Welcome back Sunny, I missed you!

After a great "show n tell" given by 3 gear dude Marc at our last meeting I now know how to post pictures  :jump4jo": I hope!
As most know I live on Long Beach Island which got hit pretty bad by Sandy last October. Holgate at the southern end of the island really got hammered. I live in Ship Bottom which is about in the middle of the island which is 17 miles long and 4 or 5 blocks wide in most places. Anyway we got about 4 feet of water on our street. Lucky for us the house is about 4 feet off the ground. We had to replace all our flooring but furniture, dry wall, insulation etc were OK.
BUT -- Poor Sunny was in my neighbors garage and got drown. Water was over the dash. To make things worse, we were not allowed back on the island for two weeks.
The insurance company wrote Sunny off as total, but he was to good to go to the scape yard. So I bought it back, not knowing what I was going to do, restore or part out.
With so much going on with the house repairs Sunny was not a high priority. Now that things sort of back to normal my son Tim and I decided to try getting Sunny back on the road.
I try and post the progress or lack of from time to time.
The pictures below show Sunny when we first got to the island.

Notice the coating of oil on the pick up, that was the high water mark. The oil came out of Sunnys engine.

Notice the water in the headlights.

Tim's pointing at the high "oil" mark with one hand and Sunnys old engine, which I had just cleaned up, with the other.

When we took the speakers out they still worked!

Still water after two weeks.

Don't take long for the engine to get funky.

Getting ready for the trip to Tim's. Water still coming out! But the flag survived.

Jay thanks for the generous offer. We just started the tear down. We did find a donor car, which I'll post pictures of soon. I got it mostly for the dash board parts wiper motor, switches etc. but the motor sounds pretty good. We won't know till we get it out and look it over. I'm hoping the transmission was sealed tight enough that no water got in. Won't know till we look at it also. I'll certainly take you up on your offer if my other plans don't work out. Thanks again Jay.

While Sunny is slooooowly being taken apart we found a doner car up in North Jersey at 70 sedan. I got it for all the switches etc on the dash, the gas tank, ignition, wiper motor, starter and maybe some other parts. We call him Rusty because on the way home the front wheel bearing got real hot and the valve on the back tire split. When we tried to jack him up the jack went right thru the frame rail.  &(rage_ The car looked liked it was starting to bend in half. Doors, fenders, hood and trunk look good and the glass is good also. A plus is the engine looks like it might be OK. We won't know till we get it out and look inside.

On the way home

Got some parts out. Even has an original AM/FM Sapphire radio

All I can say is WOW. I've got to change the oil and adjust the valves. I'm having a hard time just figuring how to get back off the floor. #banghead Good luck!! thumpup)-
