Not sure if you guys have ever heard of Ospho, but I have been using it to convert rust before painting and it works great!  I spray it on the rust and overnight the rust (iron oxide) is converted to iron phosphate .  Not only that, but is also etches the metal to allow for better paint adhesion.  It is easy to use (spray or brush on), but it contains phosphoric acid, therefore you need to adhere to proper safety procedures (masks, gloves, goggles, no skin exposed, etc...) when handling it. 

I have had great results using this product.  Just thought i would share my experience with using this awesome product.  I believe Ace Hardware carries it.

If your doing rust repair/neutralizing and can't just cut it out and replace metal, I believe this will help.  It helped me while repairing the Benz, since replacement parts were just too expensive.  I blasted everything i could and then ospho to paint.  Saved me hundreds of dollars.

Hey Richard,

You must rinse after allowing Ospho to set up overnight.   I rinse (water) and use pre-paint cleaner afterwards to neutralize.  I also use pre-paint cleaner before Ospho to prep for Ospho.  After neutralizing, Prime and paint.  Extreme rust may need two applications of Ospho before prime/paint.

I like POR, but I LOVE Ospho and I have used both.  I also prefer Ospho vs Rust Bullet (and i have used both)

Por needs to be primed (with their primer) in order to resist UV rays.  I have seen POR flake iwhen exposed to sun.  So, if your por coating is exposed to the sun, be sure to primer it and paint it.

Ospho doesn't need a special topcoat or special primer.  Ospho just needs to be neutralized and primered (with any primer).

Looks like Ospho is available at West Marine...

BTW folks, this is heavy rubber glove stuff. Eye protection and ventilation. It does a great job but you need your PPE. Read the label

Yeah this stuff is serious! You even have to be careful not to get it on concrete, since it reacts with concrete it will distort/dissolve it! =fire
