Marc,

Thats it!

it should fire like this:

                                Front of car

                             3                 1

                              4                 2

                                 Back of car

this is why they refer to that type of engine as a "Boxer" picture each plug firing its like a couple of fighters taking a swing at each other. Stupid you bet but hey it wasn't my idea. If you switched a couple of wires around it gonna backfire and good!

switch em back and let us know how it works out.

Now if the dist. drive gear is not instaulled right the diagram could be 1 or as much as 2 wires off.

If that is the case you could have adjusted the valves wrong also.

You should take out #1 plug and take the valve cover off Bring #1 up to TDC and check the valves and where the wires are on the cap and adjust wires as needed.

According to your diagram they are wrong.

Thanks Jack and Bob, I need to move some wires and I will be all set, The #1 Plug wire is where the notch in the dist. is. So from my diagram I have to move 4 to 2, 2 to 3 and 3 to 4  c23 c23 f+t

So it will now look like this:

Marc,

If you remember we used a screwdriver in the spark plug hole and the notch on the dizzy to verify that #1 was at TDC. I think your distributor is off a few teeth but not enought to throw the firing order out. If you look at Jacks diagram its showing  the 1 4 3 2 firing order. I'd rearrange the wires and give it another shot. Be sure that you are following the correct rotation of the distributor or its going to get confusing fast!

Ok, I agree Bob,  it is a might confusing if I let it be...  I know that #1 is at the notch,  IF I rotate my image 90 degrees clockwise it all matches....  s#r I1t  I just want to  drive&&

Ok, I got the firing order correct, a light spray of starting fluid and she roared to life, only to sputter and die a few seconds later.  c23 I am getting fuel to the carb, but it is not getting to the engine...    &m&  Well, I adjusted the carb up and down the scale and no dice...  I fear that I will need to take the carb apart again...

Check the float, also can you see gas coming out the accelerator pump nozzle ? ( the brass squirter in the middle of the carb opening ) check this with the engine not running!

Are you getting a click from the cut off valve and is it hooked up ?

What should I start the bypass air screw and the Volume control screw at??? since I did not mark them when  I rebuilt the carb. stoned# Matt posted his great tutorial after I had done mine... :icon_geek:

I do not see gas comming out of the acc pump...  Do I need to take the top of the carb off to check the float?  and what am I checking for?? to see if it is bound up on it's track???

Look for air leaks.
I checked all my bolts and they are tight.

Yea, Marc, it maight be good to check the tutorial, it's not completely done, but done enough for you
In there shows how to check the needle valve, and assembly of the float.
take the top off the carb and see if you have gas in the bowl.

Might want to run through the tutorial to make sure you  did not forget to put something in like the jet

do you have the pump hoses hooked up backwards?
If you have fuel in the carb bowl, then you are ok, or you can disconnect the tube that goes from the pump to the carb, turn the engine by hand and see if you have gas coming out

I can't remember what the generic starting point is for the bypass air screw and the Volume control screw  - been so long..maybe 3 turns out each?  I have that info at home.  If you got a rebuild kit with instructions it will say it in there in all that small print

i will have to put those defaults in the carb tutorial.

The # of turns shown int the tutorial are for a 1776 engine so they will be way diff, especially the big screw guy.  Myabe halve his turns, and keep the # of turns  the ssame for the small screw as shown on a paper towel in the tutorial   - jsut some thoughts.  It should at least get it running
