Fastback 300 bucks.
« on: February 15, 2010, 08:45:47 am »

Saw this when I was looking for sheet metal on craigslist to make my door panels.

Are you picky about your sheet metal?  I'm parting out a subaru, you could cut lots of sheet metal off that to reuse.

I dunno if that would work to make door panels. I'm going for shiny.

Shiny bare metal?  thats just some sandpaper away, something you'll need to do with any sheet metal.  Be sure to clearcoat it if you want to keep it that way.

If you want really shiny you'll need to use aluminum and spend a good deal of time polishing.

Kinda like a dull shine, like a stainless refrigerator. My neighbor is in the metal union?! I'm going to talk to him about it.

Yep, you can get that look with just a bit of good sanding and clear coat.  I did the cabinets in my shop the same way.

you can buy 4x10 sheets at Fazzio's cheap! You could do galvanized...cool pattern & you just need to wipe it down to keep it nice.

Personally I love "engine turned" aluminum

Indeed. We need to schedule a class trip. I am a professional Fazzio's tour guide as I have spent many, many hours perusing the deepest darkest secret passages and love to take newbies for their first expedition.

Plus I need roll bar tubing to finish the Baja

I haven't excursioned in awhile but we used to go get tubing for our race cars there.

Do you have a bender?  I think I have a guy who's going to make the main cage for us since the rule are very strict on cage builds when you get on a roadcourse, but I'd like to make up some other bits, been contemplating adding a bender to the shop but haven't bit the bullet on that yet.

I bought the Harbor Freight roller but haven't used it yet. I intend to file a full report
when I use it. (in a week or two)

Please do.  I have my doubts on how it would handle 1.75 DOM but it looks interesting.  Unfortunately HFs other offering is the notorious "pipe kinker"

I'm thinking I may go with a JD2 or Pro Tools but I cant quite convince myself to spring for one.

Thats cause they're "PIPE" benders, designed for plumbing pipe. The dies are the wrong size.
There is a trick for using it though (in a pinch).
Cork one end of the tube, fill it full of sand and cork the other end then bend it.
Sand wont let it kink (sometimes)  :icon_blackeye:
